Instructions to Authors

Indian Journal of Applied Radiology (IJAR) is an international, open access, biannual, peer reviewed online journal (print on demand) with a commitment to serve the scientific community. Contributions are welcomed from all parts of the world. Studies submitted to Indian Journal of Applied Radiology should follow established recommendations for reporting research studies (http://www. equator-network.org), including the STARD (Standards for Reporting of Diagnostic Accuracy) checklist for studies dealing with diagnostic accuracy, the CONSORT (Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials) statement for randomized controlled trials, the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) statement for meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials, and the CARE guidelines for case reports. The journal accepts Manuscripts only through online system and manuscripts must be prepared in agreement with “Uniform requirements for Manuscripts submitted to Biomedical Journal” developed by International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (October 2004).

Research ethics and redundant publication

Submitted manuscripts must not have any earlier published data and must not be under consideration for publication elsewhere. The Council of Science Editors defines redundant publication as reporting considerably the similar work more than once, without acknowledgment of the original source(s). A manuscript that is possibly redundant comprises the following features: (1) at least one of the authors has contributed to both or all reports (if there are no common authors, plagiarism is more likely than redundant publication); (2) the subject or study populations are often the same or similar; (3) the methodology is typically identical or nearly so; and (4) the results and their interpretation generally vary little, if at all. Guidelines for multiple publications are based on instructions described in the Uniform Requirements for Manuscript Submitted to Biomedical Journals (Ann Intern Med 1988;108:258-265). Any research involving humans and animals should be approved by the Institutional Review Board and Animal Care Committee, respectively, of the organization where the study took place.Informed consent should be obtained, unless waived by the institutional review board, from patients who participated in clinical investigations. When reporting experiments on human subjects, indicate whether the procedures followed were in accordance with the ethical standards of the responsible committee on human experimentation (institutional or regional) and with the Helsinki Declaration of 1975, as revised in 2000 (available at http://www.wma.net/e/policy/17-c_e.html). Do not use patients’ names, initials, or hospital numbers, especially in illustrative material. When reporting experiments on animals, indicate whether the institution’s or a national research council’s guide for, or any national law on the care and use of laboratory animals was followed.Data appearing in each article are the responsibility of the authors and not of the Indian Journal of Applied Radiology.

Authorship and Declaration of Conflict of Interest

Authorship credit should be based only on substantial contributions and an individual has to meet all four categories established by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE); 1. Conception and design or acquisition of data or analysis and interpretation of data;2. Drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content; 3. final approval of the version to be; 4. Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work. The ICMJE guidelines further mentions that participation solely in the acquisition of funding or the collection of data does not justify authorship. Individuals who have contributed substantially to some but not all of the four categories, or in other areas, should be listed in Acknowledgments. Indian Journal of Applied Radiology does not allow dual or shared corresponding authorship and does not allow adding authors or changing the first or the corresponding authors, once its decisionof Minor Revision or Accept is made. If any author wishes to be removed from the byline, he or she should submit a letter signed by all authors, indicating his or her wish to be deleted from the list of authors. Any change in the name order in the byline requires a letter signed by all authors.  All potential conflicts of interest including any research funding, other financial support, and material support, if any exists, need to be clearly identified in the unblinded Full Title Page.Corresponding or first author author will take responsibility of the integrity of the work as a whole from inception to published article and will be designated as ‘guarantor’.

Clinical trial registry

IJAR favors registration of clinical trials and would publish clinical trials that have been registered with a clinical trial registry that allows free online access to public. Registration in the following trial registers is acceptable: http://www.ctri.in/; http://www.actr.org.au http://www.umin.ac.jp/ctr. This is applicable to clinical trials that have begun enrollment of subjects in have commenced enrollment of subjects prior to June 2008 would be considered for publication IJAR registered retrospectively with clinical trial registry that allows unhindered online access to public without charging any fees.

Aims and Scope

Indian Journal of Applied Radiology (IJAR) will provide a forum for latest advancements in the field of Radiology covering following aspects:
X-ray Radiography, Imaging Sciences, Diagnostic Imaging, digital radiology, Gastrointestinal Imaging, Genitourinary Imaging, Head and Neck Imaging, Health Policy and Practice, Medical/Radiation Physics, Molecular Imaging, Musculoskeletal Imaging, Neuroradiology, Nuclear Medicine, Obstetric Imaging, Paediatric Imaging, Oncologic Imaging, Special Reports, Technical Developments, Thoracic Imaging, Ultrasonography, Vascular/Interventional Radiology, Computer Applications in Radiology, Contrast Media, Emergency Radiology, Oral Radiology, Evidence-based Practice and Experimental Studies.
Papers on radiological protection, quality assurance, audit in radiology and matters relating to radiological training and education are also included. In addition, each issue will contain correspondence, book reviews and notices of forthcoming events.

Types of Manuscripts

  • Editorials are generally written by the editor(s).
  • Original articles: These comprise randomized controlled trials, studies of screening, intervention studies and diagnostic test, cost effectiveness analyses, outcome studies, and case-control series
  • Brief Report: is a short report of original research which includes small number of subjects. The results may be presented descriptively without any prescribed statistical analysis or hypothesis testing.
  • Review articles: Methodical critical assessments of literature and data sources. It is expected that these articles would be written by individuals who have done considerable work on the subject or are considered specialists in the field.
  • Pictorial essays: is a reviewwhich displays a series of cases or images which are essentially for teaching. The amount of text is smaller thanthat of a typical review article and messages aremainly depicted by figures.
  • Case reports: New and interesting or rare cases having clinical significancemay be reported.
  • Images Section (in the Residents and students section): IJAR will have a residents and students section in which Interesting and teaching images from all imaging modalities can be submitted with a short write-up for 150-250 words and upto 5 references.
  • Technical reports: These are typically short technical reports about a procedure or technique that is unique or new or in the experience of the author of interest to the readers.
  • Letter to the Editor: are short and conclusive observations preferably associated to articles earlier published in the Journal or views expressed preliminary observations that need a later paper for validation. The letter could have up to 500 words and 5 references. No abstract is required.
  • Announcements of conferences, CME’s, courses, awards, and other eventshavingimportancefor the readers should be submitted with the name and address of the person from whom additional information can be obtained.

Preparation of the Manuscript

First/Title Page File:

  • Includes the following items:
  • Title of Manuscript
  • Names, academic degree, affiliations, and addresses of the authors: full author name, must be provided in the order of first name, middle name (if any exists), and last name for all participating authors. Contact information of the corresponding author: name, mailing address, phone number, fax number, and e-mail address.
  • Type of manuscript
  • Word count excluding abstract, references, tables, and figure legends
  • Acknowledgments
  • Conflicts of interest statement and funding
  • Cover Letter
  • Use doc/docxfiles. Do not zip the files.

Article file:

The main text of the article, should be submitted as a separate single Microsoft Word file and includes in the order of blinded title page, abstract, introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, references, tables, and figure legends. Do not include any information (such as acknowledgement, your names in page headers, etc.) in this file. Do not incorporate images in the file.  Abstract should start on a separate page and should be structured including Objective, Materials and Methods, Results, and Conclusion. Do not use reference citations in the abstract. Abbreviations should be minimized and, if used, must be defined within the abstract by full terminology followed by abbreviation in parenthesis.  At  the bottom of the abstract, write 3-6 keywords (index terms). The first paragraph of materials and methods should address whether the study was conducted under an approval by the Institutional Review Board (with or without patient informed consent) and Animal Care Committee of the institution where the study took place for any investigation involving humans and animals, respectively.

References

Start on a separate page in the Main Document, numbering the references consecutively in the order in which they appear in the text.
• All references must be cited in the text.
• Unpublished data should not be cited in the reference list, but parenthetically in the text, for example: (Smith DJ, personal communication), (Smith DJ,unpublished data).
• Journal names should be abbreviated according to the Index Medicus.
• All authors are to be listed when six or fewer; when there are seven or more, the first six should be given, followed by “et al.”
• Inclusive page numbers (e.g., 111-114) are to be given.
Identify references in text, tables, and legends by Arabic numerals in square bracket in superscript (e.g. [10]). References cited only in tables or figure legends should be numbered in accordance with the sequence established by the first identification in the text of the particular table or figure. Bibliography should list references in order of their appearance in the text (not alphabetically) and should follow PubMed Central guidelines along with Vancouver Style. Visit the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) website http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/pmcdoc/tagging-guidelines/article/style.html and search for speci?c reference citations under the section “Fully-Tagged Citations”. Point 2.3 needs to be followed. All references must be cited in the text in superscript.
Avoid using abstracts as references. Information from manuscripts submitted but not accepted should be cited in the text as “unpublished observations” with written permission from the source. Avoid citing a “personal communication ” unless it provides essential information not available from a public source, in which case the name of the person and date of communication should be cited in parentheses in the text. For scientific articles, contributors should obtain written permission and confirmation of accuracy from the source of a personal communication. The examples of commonly cited types of references are shown below, for other types of references such as electronic media, newspaper items, etc. please refer to ICMJE Guidelines (http://www.icmje.org or http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/uniform_requirements.html).

The Editorial Process, Review process and Manuscript decision

A manuscript will be reviewed for potential publication with the understanding that it is being submitted to Indian Journal of Applied Radiology and has not been published anywhere, simultaneously submitted, or already accepted for publication elsewhere. Submitted manuscript will first be evaluated by the editor-in-chief regarding the completeness and suitability to IJAR of the submitted materials. Modifications/corrections may be requested to the authors at this stage before starting the double blind review.Manuscripts with inadequate originality, grave scientific or technical faults, or deficiency of a noteworthy message are rejected before peer-review. All manuscripts received are duly acknowledged. IJAR performs double-blinded review of the submitted manuscripts. Both the peer reviewer/editorial board member and the authors are not revealed to the other.Editor-in-chief will assign the blinded manuscript file to one editorial board member/Section Editor and one external peer reviewer for review, who are experts in the submitted subject matter and make suggestions to the editor-in-chief. Editor-in-chief will ensure that peer reviewer/editorial board member should not be affiliated with the same institutes as the contributors.
Submitted manuscripts will be rendered one of the following decisions:
Accept: The manuscript is accepted for publication.
Minor Revision: A revision needs to be submitted within 30 days of the decision. Otherwise, the manuscript will be treated as a new submission.
Major Revision: A revision needs to be submitted within 45 days of the decision. Otherwise, the manuscript will be treated as a new submission.
Reject: No further consideration: The paper will no longer be considered for publication.

Sending a revised manuscript and Proofs

The revised version of the manuscript should be submitted online in a manner similar to that used for submission of the manuscript for the first time. However, there is no need to submit the “First Page” or “Covering Letter” file while submitting a revised version. The authors are required to provide in a separate word file; a point by point answer to reviewers’ comments along with page and line numbers where changes have been made. Changes must be marked in red in the revised manuscript file and submit a revised version till reviewers and editors are contented with the manuscript. Manuscripts accepted for publication are copy edited for grammar, punctuation, print style, and format. Page proofs are sent to the corresponding author. The accepted articles will be uploaded as Ahead of Print online.Submitted manuscripts can be withdrawn by authors’ request at any time before they are formally accepted for publication. However, any withdrawal after a manuscript has entered “under review” status will not be allowed a resubmission after the withdrawal.

Publication Schedule

The journal publishes articles on its website immediately on acceptance and follows a ‘continuous publication’ schedule. Articles are compiled for ‘print on demand’ on biannual basis.

Manuscript publication charges

Once the article is accepted, then publication charges will be applicable.

Publication fee cost will be 5000 INR
USD =$ 500 (International Authors Including all Processing and Publishing Charges)
